The U.S.-China trade conflict has eroded the prices of most commodities, but one metal critical to rechargeable batteries is bucking the trend.

Nickel prices have risen 9.1% so far this year to $11,666 a metric ton, making it the best-performing base metal as investors speculate that makers of batteries for electric vehicles will demand more of the element while its supply will be constrained.
